Earl(通用汽车负责汽车设计的副总裁)奠定美国汽车的气派梦幻风格，1939年设计的圆滑流线型Buick(别克) Y-Job是全球第一款概念车，1948年设计的凯迪拉克车尾大型鳍状尾翼有空气导流功能又十分梦幻，带动当时各车厂的流行，成为美国大车的形象特色。1955年12月31日，通用汽车成为美国历史上第一个纳税超过10亿的公司。通用汽车曾是美国历史上最大的公司，可以用GDP来衡量它的财政收入。1950年代，通用汽车总裁查尔斯·E·威尔逊宣称：对通用好就是对美国好；通用汽车许多高层经理主管是由基层开始做起，如1980年代的集团董事长Roger Smith由会计出纳职位逐渐升迁至董事长兼CEO。那时，通用汽车是世界上雇员最多的公司之一，只有苏联有工业有更多雇员。1998年6月5日，通用汽车位于密歇根州的弗林特的工厂发生工人罢工，并迅速蔓延到其它的5个装配工厂，持续了7个星期之久。70年代开发可变汽门扬程的专利技术；通用汽车德国子公司Opel在1989年推出销售的五人座双门轿跑车Calibra创下市售车最低风阻系数(Coefficient of drag)0.26 的纪录，并保持这项纪录达十年之久。90年代初通用汽车小卡车使用的4L80-E自动变速箱也被劳斯莱斯、宾利、Jaguar、Aston Martin等高价车选为原厂配备自排。1994年通用汽车的Oldsmobile Aurora与1995年的奔驰W210 E-Class是当时全球车身最坚固的汽车(车身结构震动频率达25Hz)(P.49,Car and Driver,US edition,February 1997)，通用汽车的耐用度，依通用汽车广告声明指出，旗下会被重负荷使用的美国雪佛兰卡车从1981年至2007年皆为使用期间最长的卡车厂牌(美国汽车监理单位牌照登记纪录)。90年代中期通用汽车在平价车款里普遍配备十万英里免更换的白金火星塞，可使用至车辆报废免更换的自排变速箱油等。1999年凯迪拉克DTS是全球第一辆有夜视镜功能(thermal imaging night vision system，热感应影像夜视系统)的汽车，能在挡风玻璃投射灯光不及之处显示黑暗地带的影像，以及电脑控制可迅速依路面状况自动调整软硬度的电磁悬吊系统科技，是全球反应速度最快的悬吊系统，意大利法拉利599 GTB跑车也使用此套避震系统。2000年通用推出低污染概念车GM Precept(使用燃料电池或柴油/电池Hybrid车)，风阻系数仅0.16，是目前全球最流线的五人座汽车，也是全球第一辆每加仑柴油可跑80英哩的汽车。90年代末期通用汽车在美国部分车款可选配OnStar智慧通讯系统，具有卫星导航与数位收音机功能，车祸时系统会自动向警方报案，必要时原厂可与车上引擎电脑无线连结找出故障，车主忘记将车钥匙拿出车外时，车主连络OnStar可用透过手机帮车主遥控打开车门。2007年通用汽车在汽车科技上已经研发出可靠的无人自动驾驶汽车，能自动完成路边停车动作，可以无人驾驶无人遥控由电脑判断路况自己跑完长途路线抵达目标，是参与测试的各车厂中唯一达到自动驾驶标准被美国国防部选为未来战场的无人自动驾驶车辆。通用汽车过去在美国市场长期销售车辆给租车公司，原本租车公司愿意大量买进的车代表品质不错维修费低，然而租车公司每隔一段时间就拍卖掉大批长哩程的车，造成同厂牌二手车价格大幅降低，消息随着网络传播引来许多个人车主的抱怨，2007年开始通用汽车和其他两大美国车厂已决定不再大批卖车给租车公司，以免再被对手用二手车价作文章误导客户产生品质有问题的错觉。2007年JD Power调查新车使用三年后的耐用度通用汽车旗下的Buick与Lexus并列第一，Buick在此品质调查中已多次超越丰田汽车。通用汽车旗下Opel中型轿车Insignia被欧洲汽车媒体选为2009年欧洲Car of the year。2011年通用汽车的Chevrolet Cruze是第一辆在欧洲Euro NCAP车辆前方与侧面撞击测试中都拿下满分的汽车。通用汽车新款电动车Chevrolet Volt是2012年欧洲Car of the year。2017年3月7日，法国标致汽车母公司PSA，同意 以22亿欧罗(约179.4亿港元)。向美国通用汽车收购欧宝(Opel)与英国佛贺汽车和通用在欧洲的汽车金融资务50%权益，作为交易代价的一部分，通用获得标致4.2%股本的认购期权，惟在期权发行后5年内不得行使。2018年5月10日，通用汽车和韩国产业银行(KDB)将分别向通用汽车韩国业务注资64亿美元和7.5亿美元，根据协议，通用汽车亚太区总部将落户韩国，该新亚太总部将管理亚太地区生产、销售和技术开发，但不包括中国，股权重整之后，通用汽车持有通用韩国77%股份，韩国发展银行持有17%股份，上汽集团持有剩余的6%股份。2018年10月4日本田汽车和通用汽车达成协议，共同开发无人驾驶汽车。本田将向通用汽车的无人驾驶汽车公CruiseAutomation注资7.5亿美元，本田还会在 2030 年之前向 Cruise投入20亿美元。这意味着本田将投资Cruise共27.5亿美元。通用汽车公司的售后服务和零部件业务部通过通用汽车、通用汽车Goodwrench 和AC德科的品牌进行汽车零部件的销售；而通用汽车动力总成部则负责汽车发动机及变速器的市场销售。2004年因为通用汽车与福特汽车、克莱斯勒汽车一样一直给予员工极好的终身退休金与高额度医疗给付，在退休员工人数愈来愈多，高利润休旅车与卡车因油价高涨而销售衰退之下，穆迪公司将通用的债券等级评为只比垃圾债券高一级。一个显著因素是美国雇员不断上升的医疗费用，详信分析表明分摊到一辆车上是1800美元，这代表通用汽车帮员工和其眷属支付医疗费用的金额比购买钢铁的金额还高。2007年的巨额亏损主要是通用汽车决定将历年累积可以抵税，但抵税期限即将到期的亏损金额在2007年一口气全部提列在财报来抵税所致，并非一年内营业亏损三百多亿美元。在2005年，通用汽车陆续把手上持有的富士重工股份全数卖给丰田汽车；而在2006年4月也正式宣布把全数五十铃的股份出让并退出股东团，该等股份也在同年11月由丰田汽车购入，也使丰田成为五十铃最大股东之一。而在2006年3月，通用宣布把铃木汽车的半数股份出让，2008年更把手上之铃木汽车股份全数卖出，并退出股东团。通用、福特、克莱斯勒这美国三大汽车公司需要面对的另一个问题是北美地区雇员的养老金债务问题，2008年通用汽车在现任员工约26万人，退休在家领取终身退休福利与高额医疗给付的员工却多达50万人。通用汽车一直给工作满三十年的退休员工终身退休金 (即使基层退休工人也可终身月领约3000美元的退休金) 与高额度医疗给付 (包含眷属亦可给付)，UBS在2002年分析大概造成250亿美金的债务，相形之下日本车厂并未给员工同样良好的退休福利，产生严重的成本差异，然而美国三大汽车公司的汽车售价并未比日本汽车贵。2003年，通用增加了130亿美元的债务，其中主要是为其养老金基金补提供足够的预备金。许多美国大公司都有类似的养老金问题。2008年11月，通用汽车公布该年第三季业绩，因油价短期内高涨并引发后续的金融海啸，造成美国汽车市场上原本销售成长最快的汽车种类休旅车与卡车大幅衰退，美国车厂在休旅车与卡车的市场占有率虽然一直大幅领先日本车厂，但是被高油价打击也因此最为严重，美国车厂高利润的休旅车与卡车销售量大幅减少，现金流出现严重告急，每月至少需要110亿美元营运，警告必须获美国联邦政府注资，否则有即时倒闭的危机。著名评级机构穆迪公司认为，由于债务过多，通用汽车破产几率有70%。2008年底美国政府通过纾困134亿美金给通用，但是在2009年3月31日前必须提出有获利能力的证明计划，否则将收回所有纳税人资金，通用决定裁员47000人和关闭五座美国本土的高成本工厂当成第一波削减成本计划，并拍卖总公司的诸多古董车和经典纪念车。并且抛弃钍星、庞蒂克、萨博和悍马4个品牌。2009年初全球经济持续恶化，1月新车销售量不如预期，连日本本田和丰田纷纷传出裁员停工和更换主管，通用股价2月20日在纽约下跌11.5%，以1.77美元收盘，跌到大萧条以来的最低水准。通用汽车欧洲及亚洲分公司纷纷传出资金困窘消息，除了瑞典的萨博子公司正式向法院申请重整，德国的欧宝汽车及韩国的大宇也分别表示需要纾困金援，显示GM财务正急速恶化。通用汽车于2009年6月1日根据破产法第11章第363条的规定，向美国曼哈顿破产法庭申请破产保护。计划书显示，通用汽车的资产总值为822.9亿美元，负债1728.1亿美元。债权人数量超过10万家，包括债券持有人、工会和诸多汽车零部件供应商。最大无担保债权人为威尔明顿信托公司（Wilmington Trust Co），持有227.6亿美元通用债权，而美国汽车工人联合会持有205.6亿美元债务。2009年8月19日通用汽车公司确认已经与科尼赛克集团就出售萨博汽车公司100%股份签署了股份转让协议，但最终交易失败。12月中旬通用汽车公司将萨博汽车品牌旗下部分资产售予中国BAIC（北京汽车控股）。2010年1月通用汽车公司确认已经与世爵汽车就出售萨博汽车100%股份签署了股份转让协议，新公司Saab Spyker即将成立。11月1日通用汽车旗下品牌庞帝克由于通用汽车与庞帝克经销商的合约到期，10月31日宣布正式倒闭。2010年11月18日通用汽车成功在纽约证券交易所上市，发行4.78亿股普通股,每股33美元，集资157.7亿美元。如果承销商行使超额配售权﹐增发7170万股﹐那么普通股的发售总额将达到181亿美元，8700万股法定可转换次级优先股，股票价值43.5亿美元，合共集资约231亿美元。通用汽车在2011年度全球销售903万辆汽车，比2010年增加了7.6％，超越德国大众汽车的815万辆和日本丰田汽车的790万辆，重新夺回全球最大汽车制造商的地位。其中，通用在北美市场的销量达到290万辆，上升了11.4％，在欧洲的销量上涨了4.4％，在南美洲的销量增加了3.9％。2012年11月22日通用汽车旗下GM财务，同意以42亿美元(约327亿港元)购入Ally的欧洲及南美洲汽车融资业务。 Ally原为GM的汽车融资分支GMAC，但GM在2006年把业务的控制性权益售予私募基金Cerberus。2008年金融风暴后，GMAC被美国政府提供170亿美元救助贷款，易名后续经营汽车融资业务。2013年9月24日通用汽车公司将斥资约32亿美元，从全美汽车工人联合会(UAW)退休人员医疗保健信托基金VEBA中，回购1.2亿股优先股，每股作价27元。2013年12月9日美国政府出清最后一批通用汽车（GM）持股，最终亏损105亿美元（约819亿港元）离场，为历史性拯救该国其中一家最知名企业的行动画上句号。name = 'Transport', description = '交通', content = {{ type = 'text', text = [[]] }, { type = 'item', original = 'articulated bus', rule = 'zh-cn:铰接客车;zh-tw:双节公车;zh-hk:挂接巴士;', description = }, { type = 'item', original = 'BRT', rule = 'zh-cn:快速公交系统;
